Paintings & Works on Paper
German artist Paula Moderson-Becker (1876-1907) was among the earliest of the important expressionists.

In the later years of her brief life, she struggled constantly with the competing demands of art and family. Though she sold only three paintings during her lifetime—Rainer Maria Rilke bought Säugling mit der Hand der Mutter, on view at right—she left a luminous body of paintings, prints, and drawings. The work displayed here focuses on her final years, when her colors became more intense under the influence of such painters as van Gogh and Gauguin.

Modersohn-Becker died at 31 of an embolism.
